For the second time ever, the entire collection of Robert Shetterly’s AWTT portraits will be on display. This special exhibition features over 270 portraits of American figures—historical icons to contemporary activists—who have acted to confront injustice and advocate for change.
The opening event will take place from 5 to 7 pm at Bates Mill Atrium, 35 Canal Street, Lewiston, Maine. The portrait exhibit will be up through December 15th, 2024.

Judith Tannenbaum was the author of six poetry collections and coauthor with Spoon Jackson of the double memoir published by New Village Press, By Heart: Poetry, Prison, and Two Lives. Judith was a poet and educator who was deeply involved with California’s Arts-in-Corrections programs. She was an authority on prison arts, and an advisor to arts programming in Minnesota state prisons. She taught in prisons in eight states. The book originates from the exhibition Waging Peace, which has been shown in Vietnam and the University of Notre Dame, and has been touring the eastern United States in conjunction with book launches in Boston, Amherst, and New York. The volume editors for Waging Peace in Vietnam: U.S. Soldiers and Veterans Who Opposed the War held a book launch and reception at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Integrated Learning Center. The book accompanies the exhibition Waging Peace, on display at the Integrated Learning Center from September 23 – October 11. Activist, author, and clinical psychiatrist Dr. Mindy Thompson Fullilove was a panelist at a conference entitled Urban Activism: Staking Claims in the 21st Century. This conference emerged from the shared need to create a collective discourse on how critical urban research and urban political activism are increasingly converging and creating a common field of inquiry and action. It connects scholars in various fields such as planners, geographers, historians, and critical urbanists with activists working on housing rights and the right to urban identity and the city more generally. Dr. Fullilove is the author of Root Shock, Urban Alchemy, and coauthor of Homeboy Came to Orange.

Held at Pen and Brush, a 125-year-old nonprofit that works for parity of women artists and writers.The reading occurred at the same time as an art exhibition at Pen and Brush, Women’s Work: Art & Activism in the 21st Century.
