Anne Herbert (1950-2015) was an American journalist and author. She was an assistant editor of CoEvolution Quarterly, a precursor to the Whole Earth Review, and is known for coining the phrase “Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty.” Her book, The Rising Sun Neighborhood, was serialized in the March 1981 Whole Earth Catalog. She and Margaret Paloma Pavel co-authored Random Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty (New Village Press, 2016) which has illustrations by Mayumi Oda and foreword by peacemaker Desmond Tutu.

The 30th Anniversary Edition of Random Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty (New Village Press, 2024) celebrates Herbert’s legacy of kindness.
